E3 2011 Standouts: Bastion

The crew over at SuperGiant Games already had me hooked to Bastion back when it was in it’s earliest stages. Their defining characteristic for Bastion is the narrator that speaks of almost every task you do in the game. From what I’ve seen, it’s a very cool feeling to have this mysterious man make all your actions sound more heroic. The art is a whole other story: just look at their artist, Jen Zee’s work, it’s fantastic. The visuals are so very vibrant and stylish, it puts other games to shame. Bastion is sure to please, and I’m highly anticipating it.

Bastion is part of the XBLA Summer of Arcade 2011.

E3 2011 Standouts: Halo 4

Everyone said that Master Chief’s story was finished, but the truth is Microsoft likes money, and Halo sells. Don’t take that in a bad way though, I’m just as excited as you are, but story-wise this game is unnecessary. Oh, who am I kidding? This is brilliant. Cortana waking up the Chief to fight some presumably new enemies on the mysterious planet from the legendary ending of Halo 3 has me giddy. Halo 4 is a trilogy though, so you can expect 5 and 6 are happening in the future. The teaser is well done, nothing more than sort of a rehash of the aforementioned ending.

E3 2011 Standouts: Bioshock: Infinite

Infinite is easily my game of the show.

After its original announcement last year I’ve been eating every morsel of information Irrational Games could give me. This is a game that is going to change everything, just as the original Bioshock did. Watch the trailer, and you will see exactly what I’m talking about. There is more emotion in the first 25 seconds than in way too many games nowadays. The relationship between Elizabeth and the player’s character, Booker DeWitt is exciting, especially considering Ken Levine’s approach to storytelling. Reading the previews last week detailing Elizabeth’s ability to open tears into other time-lines threw me way off what I thought the game was, but I knew something weird had to be shown off, I mean, it’s still a Bioshock title.
