The State of The Grass

Woah, Polygonal Grass has changed.

It’s just a different theme, calm down. But with the new theme, I’m trying to decide the purpose of the blog. WordPress allows me to publish good-looking content for free, whereas Tumblr lets me post content quickly without fussing with the layout. More people browse Tumblr than WordPress, though, and that means less people read my stuff.

I’m thinking Polygonal Grass will be a place to post the stuff I’d like to look nice and professional for my portfolio. So, don’t expect consistent updates. Maybe, I’ll publish my new, weekly SideQuesting columns here.

First Screenshot of Mechromancer Revealed, New Ability Detailed

An official Twitter account for Borderlands 2′s Mechromancer Gaige revealed the first in-game screenshot of the class, and detailed one of her new abilities.

In between gory descriptions of her mechanized partner Deathtrap’s murder techniques, Gaige offered to explain one of three new abilities: “Electrical Burn,” “Sharing is Caring,” or “Make it Sparkle.” The winner, “Make it Sparkle,” causes Deathtrap to deal elemental damage based on the type Gaige shoots it with. “So your normal Deathtrap slashes a dude with his digistruct claws. Which is awesome. But after I make it sparkle with, say, a fire gun, the poor sucker on the end of the Deathtrap’s claws will be bleeding AND burning AND screaming.”

The Mechromancer class will be available October 16 as DLC for $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points, or free for those who pre-ordered Borderlands 2 from participating retailers.

Gears of War creator, and games industry luminary Cliff Bleszinski announced his departure from Epic Games Wednesday.

The North Carolina-based company released a statement from the former design director, who contributed to many games, including Jazz Jackrabbit and the Unreal Tournament franchises, on its blog. “I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop,” Bleszinski wrote of his 20-years with the company, “I literally grew up in this business, as Mike [Capps, Epic Games president] likes to say. And now that I’m grown up, it’s time for a much needed break.”

“I will miss the projects, the playtests, the debates, and most importantly, the people,” Bleszinski wrote in a farewell message to his colleagues, “Epic only hires the best of the best, and it has been a joy working with each and every one of you on a daily basis, whether you were hired weeks ago or decades ago. I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with a variety of disciplines, from code to art to marketing and PR – it’s been one big, rewarding learning experience. I’m confident that each project that is being built, whether at Epic, Chair, PCF, or Impossible will be top notch and will please gamers and critics alike.”

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, and President Mike Capps expressed their gratitude for Bleszinski’s contributions to the company, and offered well wishes for his future.

It remains unclear if Bleszinski will continue his career in the games industry.

Bleszinki is the fourth in a recent line of notable developers to leave Epic Games. In August, Gears of War Series Producer Rod Fergusson left to work for Irrational Games on Bioshock Infinite. A few days later, People Can Fly founder Adrian Chmielarz, Creative Director Andrezej Poznanski, and Artist Michal Koseradzki left the Bulletstorm developer after Epic Games acquired the studio. Arma 3 Developers Arrested in Greece

Two Bohemia Interactive employees are in jail, accused of spying on a military installation by Greek authorities.

Creative Director Ivan Buchta, 28, and Environment Designer Martin Pezlar, 33, were arrested on the Greek island of Limnos after authorities found a camcorder and camera containing footage of camps and military facilities on the island.

“We have a statement from the Greek police,” Czech Foreign Ministry Spokesman Vit Kolar told The Escapist, “saying they were taking pictures and video footage of military facilities on the island on which they were detained, and that they entered the military facilities despite warning.”

Buchta and Pezlar were working on Arma 3, the upcoming game in Bohemia Interactive’s series of tactical military shooters. Arma 3, set to release in 2013, takes place on a fictional Limnos in the year 2035, according to a statement from the developer.

“The in-game Limnos is close to completion, and it’s far from an identical replication of the real place,” the statement reads. “It was heavily modified to fit the game’s backstory, a purely fictional 2035 setting. It was rescaled to only 75% of the real island, and it does not attempt to display any real world military installations situated on the island of Lemnos.”

The company claims Buchta and Pezlar were not paid to visit the island for research, but were visiting as tourists.”Their holiday was a product of their interest in the island, triggered by their work on Arma 3 over the past two years of development.”

“Our company has never gathered or collected any restricted information, such as photos or blueprints of military installations of any nation,” wrote Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Spanel on the company’s forums, “nor have we ever tasked anybody else to do it on our behalf.” “We always respect the law and we develop all of our products using publicly available materials only – Arma 3 is no exception.”

Buchta and Pezlar released a statement directed to their friends and family: “The conditions are tough, but the people we meet treat us fairly and correctly. It is all a completely absurd misunderstanding that will certainly be quickly explained. We mainly think of you, our families. You have to stay calm and not to worry about us. We hope we will meet soon.”

In 2010, Bohemia Interactive sent Art Producer David Zapletal, and Lead Artist Pavel Guglava to research Limnos for Arma 3, according to a post on the company’s website. The men collected photos and video footage of the island to be used a basis for the in-game location. “We try to avoid diverting too much from reality (still, our Limnos will not be an exact copy for many reasons), and to capture the unique atmosphere of this great place,” the post reads.

A petition for Buchta and Pezlar’s release, started by a group of passionate Arma community members, is available at www.helpivanmartin.org. As of this writing, a total of 9,325 people support the men’s release.
